Like the Yoruba proverb says “when a panel bitter is beating at a point, it means he has something to bring out of it”. Same applies to the former Vice president Atiku Abubakar who served as the second elected vice president of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 alongside former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
This will be the fifth time; the 71-year-old will be contesting for the position of presidency. He tried his first shot in 1992 under Social Democratic Party, where he lost to MKO Abiola and Babagana Kingibie becoming third before he stepped down for MKO Abiola.
The second attempt was when he became the presidential candidate for Action Congress in 2006, after he announced his intention on 25th November 2006. But then his name was not on the INEC list because he was disqualified on basis of being indicted for corruption by the panel set up by government. This matter later became court case which was ruled out that INEC had no power to disqualify him. At the end of the election he became third with 2.8 million votes behind late Umaru Musa YarAdua and Muhammadu Buhari.
This undying desire continued as he tried his shot for the third time, when he lost to Good Luck Jonathan in the primary under PDP in 2011. On the fourth run, he was cut shot at the primary under APC in 2015 by Muhammadu Buhari, and now is the fifth time after he was declared winner of the PDP presidential primary election.
Should we say this will be his final trial if he eventually becomes the winner of 2019 election or is it going to be another record of loss? What I’m really concern about this issue is that what is Atiku trying to achieve? Is it for the good of the country or for his personal gain? Because looking at that analysis his, lost has been to the same cycle/caliber of people especially President Muhammadu Buhari or should we say is luck charm is not strong enough?
We patiently await the outcome of 2019 general election.
