THE ART OF VOLUNTEERING

Usually, Nigerians do not like to indulge in community development activities such as volunteering. They are content with telling their neighbours and acquaintances what and what not to do. If there is quite a number of listening ears, they go as far as giving suggestions on ways changes can be made. They task the government in these conversations while not leaving the comfort of their homes. There are times when they know that Non-governmental organisations are springing up to cover for the government’s excesses, they remain passive in action but ever active in slandering and allocating blame.

Fortunately, in recent times, Nigerians have become more open to NGOs. Many Nigerians now get involved as well as involving their kids or wards in the action phase of change; be it sensitisation, awareness, etc. This part of helping, which they allow their kids and wards do, is better known as volunteering.  Simply put, these kids are volunteers.

Volunteering is the act of offering to help out in the service rendered by an organisation, usually, without remuneration. This service is usually organised by private individuals and organisations who feel the need to make an impact in society. The organisation, in making an impact, wants to bring more volunteers on board in a bid to have a massive impact. There is also the feeling of belonging to a great course.

In the world we’re in today, it is no news that most, if not all things depend on one’s network or circle. This circle can’t be formed by just being at home and lamenting. Things have to be done, opportunities have to be grabbed and jumped at for the circle to be formed. Through volunteering, one gets to meet others with the same mindset and desire to create change and a positive impact.

There is also the openness to greater opportunities that comes with volunteering. Although the act might seem unprofitable at first, in the long run, it pays off. This is because based on one’s attitude and commitment, opportunities that will yield much profit, salary or connections can be gotten.

Volunteering is not limited to corporate organisations alone. Participating in social activities is also a form of volunteering.  Other examples could be signing up for community programs, health sensitization programs, academic workshops, and many more. In the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, many were seen volunteering to join the military and defend the territory of their country.

In essence, whoever said that action speaks louder than voice didn’t tell a lie. Also, to make a change, one has to be active and known to be active because growth isn’t done with just innate ideas.
