It is often customary for us as humans to at the beginning of each year draw out plans, set goals and ambitions we hope to achieve before the year runs out, in what is now popular known as “New Year Resolution”. While for many, these purported new year resolutions are merely whimsical and are bound to slowly fade as the year goes by, for others these resolutions are pragmatic goals that all through the year they are busy trying to realize. Irrespective of which category you seem to be, nobody wishes for or wants a wasted year, which implies that either directly or subconsciously we all have goals we hope to achieve before the year runs out.
As time would have it, the year is at its tail end, and for many who have not achieved or come close to realizing their goals for 2019, worry/anxiety might begin to set in, a feeling that is common around this time of the year and has been dubbed “September Fever”. To be fair, it’s logically safe to argue that any goal you have for the year, which you have not achieved or come close to achieving by September is most likely not going to be achieved that year. However, the final whistle has not been blown and the year is not yet over.
Perhaps the most important factor responsible for September Fever is the lack of continuous conscious effort especially pertaining to the execution of mapped out goals. Despite having beautiful goals, many go into the year giving more of their time and energy to activities that are not more than mere distractions than to the realization of their goals. They seem to easily forget the popular maxim “it is not what you do once in a while that defines you but what you do daily.” As the old saying puts it, “time waits for no one”, which is why it is important to always be deliberate and purposeful. Planning is never enough to bring a dream to life or a goal to actualization.
Another important reason people often fall prey to September Fever is self-deceit. Many go into the year with unrealistic goals. Goals that will take only a miracle for them to achieve. The drive for unviable goals has been further fuelled by the multitude of religious institutions in Nigeria and their ridiculous yearly theme. For example, it is not uncommon in Nigeria to at the beginning of each year see religious institutions come up with tags such as “2019 my year of bountiful harvest”, “my year of unlimited divine breakthrough” “year of unmerited success” among many others. Of course it is important to start a year with confidence and optimism but not with so much enthusiasm that makes you entrap yourself to September Fever.
Well, another September is here and for those that are already under the grip of September Fever, we wish you quick recovery. Though 2019 might seem to be rapidly approaching its end, there is still enough time to get one or two things done. Moreover, the end of a year is always complemented by the beginning of a new one and with every new year comes a new opportunity for a better tomorrow. To draw the curtains on this month’s editorial, we wish all our esteemed readers a Happy New Month!
