They offer an in-depth connection and a rich cultural experience of the continent’s soul in its purest form.
From serenity to thrilling adventures, here’s an underrated tourist destination that deserves a spot on every traveller’s bucket list:
Sipi Falls, Uganda
Within the borders of Uganda, nestled in the Kapchorwa district is the beautiful waterfall known as Sipi Falls. It is located in the Eastern region of the country just 277km from Kampala. The name Sipi was derived from the Sipi River which was named after the wild ‘Sep’ plant. Locally, the plant was used to treat fevers and measles. They can be found near Mt. Elgon National Park, just at the foothills of Mt. Elgon.
Sipi Falls is made up of three waterfalls – each of them flows at different altitudes. The tallest of the fall’s plunges at 100m into a breathtaking splash. The other two follow at 65m and 85m. The hiking trail offers a scenic view of Lake Kyoga, the Karamoja plains, and lush coffee plantations. Sipi Falls is known as the ‘most romantic falls’ of Uganda, a spot where couples can come to experience the beauty of creation.
At Sipi Falls, you get to experience activities like hiking – because the falls are not all in one place, tourists have to hike the trails to see all 3 waterfalls. The falls have an altitude of 1,775m with a cool, misty, and lush ambience. The trek takes 3 hours on muddy terrain that goes through farmlands and riversides. As a reward, tourists get to see the epic waterfalls.
The first waterfall on the trail is thunderous and plunges at 85m. The second is a 65m cascade which has a cave behind it – that offers shelter when there are rains. The last and certainly the most beautiful waterfall seen on the hiking trail is the grand 100m fall with a pool at the bottom. Tourists are allowed to take a swim at the bottom of the waterfall.
Besides a view of the waterfalls, the hiking trail serves as a starting point for a journey to Mount Elgon, for tourists who want to have a multi-day adventure. Hiking the trail exposes you to an unadulterated beauty that makes sore feet worthwhile.
What’s more refreshing after a nice long hike? Kicking your feet up and having a good beverage. Sipi Falls is known for its delightful organic Arabica coffee. The coffee beans – grown at an altitude of 1,600m to 1,900m on the lush slopes of Mt. Elgon. Arabica coffee is well-known for having a rich, fruity, and sweet scent along with a moderate, velvety flavour. It is an important crop to the Bagishu and Sabiny communities that reside in the area.
Opportunities are open for tourists to have a hands-on coffee tour where they learn how to harvest, process and roast the beans. They get to hear stories about the coffee and have a full experience on its cultivation. The coffee tour is a great way to connect with the local farmers and be educated on their farming culture. Since 1999, Sipi Falls has produced amazing organic Arabica coffee. A delight that has cleansed the palettes and warmed tourists – and locals – for years.
From rock climbing and bird watching to mountain climbing, Sipi Falls offers tourists peaceful adventures away from urban bustle. With stunning scenery, welcoming communities, and delicious local cuisine; it’s nature at its finest.
Why visit? For untouched beauty, cultural immersion, and adventures that make every moment worthwhile.
