Ẹwà Àṣà: The Beauty of Yoruba Attire

Yoruba Attire

Wrapped in the whispers of time,
woven with threads of heritage,
the Yoruba stand adorned.
A people clothed in culture.
A tapestry of elegance and pride.

Aṣọ-Oke glistens in the sun,
handwoven stories of old,
in royal hues of Sanyan and Aláàrì,
worn by kings, queens, and lovers alike,
each thread a silent song of ancestry.

Men stand tall in their Agbádá,
grace draped upon broad shoulders,
a river of fabric cascading in folds,
whisperings of wisdom, wealth, and might.
With their Fila tilted just right,
they nod to tradition, heads held high.
They wave their Irukere,
commanding respect and honor.

Women, queens of poise and grace,
wrap themselves in their Ìró àti Bùbá,
adorned with Gèlè, sculpted like crowns,
a dance of colors, patterns bold,
each knot, a story untold.

Beads of Ìlèkè kiss their necks,
coral whispers of nobility.
A walking piece of art,
each with their Ila,
beauty wrapped in rhythm and pride.

Even the newborn is not left bare,
swaddled in soft Adìrẹ,
bathed in indigo dreams,
a child’s first embrace of culture,
woven with love, tied with legacy.

For in every stitch, every fold,
the spirit of Yoruba shines bold.
A people clothed not just in fabric,
but in stories, in honor, in time itself.

This is what they call Ẹwà Ìbílẹ̀
Beauty Unfading.
